FAQs: Dental Implants

August is dental implant month! Dr. Larry Kanning and Dr. Nelson Kanning offers a range of tooth replacement options in their Lawson dental office. The most natural looking and durable solution for missing teeth is dental implants. Dental implants allow patients to chew, speak, and drink confidently and comfortably. A dental implant is an excellent way to replace one or more missing teeth as a result of trauma, periodontal disease, or other dental issues. With the help of dental implants, patients can enjoy their routine with a functional, natural looking smile.

What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is a tiny, titanium post that is surgically attached to the jaw bone. Over the course of a few months, the dental implant will fuse into the jaw bone, and Dr. Kanning will attach a dental crown, dental bridge, or a dental bridge depending on which option best suits your needs.  Dental implants provide a natural, durable solution to your tooth replacement needs.

How do I know if I am a good candidate for dental implants?

During your consultation, Dr. Kanning will thoroughly examine your mouth, teeth, jaw, and gums to determine if you are a good candidate for dental implants.  For dental implants to have the best chance of being successful, patients must have a healthy jaw bone. Dental implants can provide a stable foundation for your tooth replacement options. However, if you aren’t a good candidate for dental implants, Dr. Kanning also offers other tooth replacement options like customized dental bridges and dentures.

What are the benefits of dental implants?

  • Durable and long lasting
  • Provide a stable foundation for dental bridges, dentures, and dental crowns
  • Cost effective
  • Natural looking solution
  • Help prevent further bone loss
  • Keep facial structure intact
  • Patients don’t need to worry about slippage when speaking, chewing, or laughing

What is the dental implant process?

To accurately place the implant, our Lawson dental office is equipped with a state-of-the-art cone beam CT scanner that allows us to plan the placement of your implant with a 3D representation of your actual anatomy. Dr. Kanning uses the CT scanner to plan your treatment and provide the best results possible.  After Dr. Kanning develops a treatment plan for you, he will begin by surgical attaching your dental implant into your jawbone. Once your dental implant and jaw fuse, Dr. Kanning will carefully attach your chosen tooth restoration. Usually, it takes about six months for your dental implant to fuse into your jawbone. Depending on your particular case, Dr. Kanning may be able to complete the restoration in one visit, or he may suggest a temporary crown or dental bridge.
