PREVENTATIVE CARE

ROUTINE CLEANINGS & EXAMS

At Kanning Dental, we believe that preventative dental care is the best way to maintain oral health. Our preventative dental care services include a dental exam, teeth cleaning, and in some cases, fluoride treatment. These help to prevent tooth decay and other oral health problems. Preventative dental care is important because it can help to prevent tooth decay and other oral health problems. Dental exams can help to identify problems early on, while teeth cleanings can remove plaque and bacteria that can cause cavities. Fluoride treatments can help to strengthen teeth and protect them from decay.

Benefits of preventative dental care include:

  • Prevention of tooth decay
  • Prevention of gum disease
  • Prevention of halitosis (bad breath)
  • Prevention of oral cancer

The risks of not getting preventive dental care can be significant. Poor oral health can lead to tooth decay, gum disease, and other serious health problems. It is important to visit a dentist for a regular check-up and teeth cleaning to ensure that any potential problems are caught early and treated.

DIGITAL XRAYS

Digital dental x-rays are a type of radiograph (an image produced by X-rays) that uses digital technology to capture images of the teeth and jaw. This form of imaging is used by dentists to help diagnose dental problems, assess the severity of existing problems, and plan treatment. Digital x-rays produce clearer images than traditional film x-rays, which can make diagnosis and treatment planning easier and more accurate. In addition, digital x-rays expose patients to less radiation than traditional x-rays. If your dentist recommends getting digital dental x-rays, you can rest assured that this is a safe and effective way to get the information they need to provide you with the best possible care.

CT SCANS

There are a few key ways in which CT scans differ from digital X-rays. The biggest difference is that CT scans provide a three-dimensional view of the inside of the mouth, while digital X-rays provide only a two-dimensional view. This means that CT scans can be used to detect problems that might not be visible on traditional X-rays, such as tumors or blockages. Another major difference is that CT scan images are significantly more detailed than X-ray images. This increased level of detail makes it easier for doctors to make an accurate diagnosis. Finally, CT scan images can be viewed from any angle, while X-ray images can only be viewed from one angle.

DENTAL SEALANTS

A dental sealant is a plastic resin that is applied to the chewing surfaces of teeth to prevent decay. The sealant bonds into the grooves and pits of teeth, forming a watertight barrier that protects against plaque and bacteria. Dental sealants are applied to molars and premolars, where most cavities occur. The sealant material is brushed on the teeth and then hardened with a dental light. The hardened sealant forms a barrier between the tooth enamel and plaque, which helps to prevent bacteria from causing cavities.

Sealants are especially effective in children and adolescents, who are more likely to develop cavities than adults. However, sealants should be used on any teeth that have particularly deep grooves or pits on the chewing surfaces, since these areas are difficult to clean at home. Dental sealants can last for many years, but eventually, they will need to be replaced. Reapplication is typically needed every 3 to 5 years, mostly during adolescence. The process usually only lasts a few minutes. Some people may experience a small amount of discomfort or sensitivity after the sealant has been applied, but this will fade within a day or two.

PREVENTATIVE CARE FAQs

  • What can I do at home to maintain a healthy mouth?

There are a few basic things that you can do at home to help maintain oral health: brush your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, floss once per day, and schedule routine dental cleanings and exams.

Brushing your teeth removes plaque and bacteria from your teeth and gums, while flossing helps remove plaque and bacteria from in between your teeth. Routine dental cleanings and exams help keep your smile healthy by removing tartar build-up, polishing your teeth, checking for cavities and other problems, and providing preventive care.

  • Why do we use dental xrays?

As a kid, I was always intrigued by dentistry and knew I wanted to be an assistant. So during quarantine in 2020,  I took the leap and graduated from Penn Foster with my Basics in Assisting. In looking for an office to start my externship hours, I was blessed to hear that Kanning Dental was hiring. I was brought on as an Extern to get my hands-on training; then, was hired on as a full time Dental Assistant in 2021.

My favorite parts about being a Kanning Dental assistant is always being pushed by my team to learn more, and the wonderful care we give each patient to make them feel comfortable while helping them through their dental anxieties.

Outside of the office you will catch me enjoying time with my family, my dogs, and catching up on a current show or movie!

  • How often do I need dental xrays?

The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends that adults get dental x-rays every two years. However, your dentist may recommend more frequent x-rays if you have a history of tooth decay or gum disease, or if you are at a higher risk for developing cavities or gum disease.
