3 Tips for Improved Dental Health

Have you noticed that your smile isn’t as white or bright as it used to be? You may be falling behind when it comes to your dental health. Your smile is one of the first things people look at when they meet you. At Kanning Dental, we want to help our patients achieve lifelong dental health so that they can enjoy the whitest and brightest versions of their natural smiles every day. Here are our three best tips for improving the longevity of your dental health:

PRACTICE THOROUGH AT-HOME CARE

Your at-home preventative care routine in your smile’s first line of defense when it comes to fighting off major dental concerns. Dental concerns like tooth decay and gum disease will sneak up on you quickly if you are not practicing routine preventative care. We recommend brushing and flossing your teeth twice a day, once in the morning and once at night. While this may seem like an obvious tip, it is perhaps the most important one. When you brush and floss twice a day, you are ensuring that no bacteria or food residue remains on your dental structures long enough to cause harm to your smile. The longer you go without brushing and flossing, the more likely it is that you will develop plaque or tartar, which must be removed by a professional dentist.

RECONSIDER YOUR DIET

The foods and beverages that you consume directly impact your dental health. Some foods and beverages are tougher on teeth than others. For example, foods like red berries, sticky candies, or tomato-based sauces often contain harmful staining agents that dull the appearance of your smile. Beverages like red wine, soda, and coffee have a similar effect. We recommend practicing moderation when it comes to enjoying these foods and beverages. Additionally, try replacing some of these treats with smile-friendly snacks instead. Snacks like fruit smoothies, yogurt, and string cheese are much easier on your smile. They also contain the necessary vitamins and minerals that your dental health needs to maintain its strength.

ADDRESS DENTAL CONCERNS EARLIER

Don’t wait until a tooth starts causing you constant pain and irritation before seeing a dentist. Instead, you should schedule regular preventative care appointments. Our office recommends scheduling a dentist appointment once every six months to ensure our dental care team can keep a close eye on your dental health. The thing to know about dental concerns is that they often only get worse over time. Even if you experience a toothache that eventually goes away on its own, the underlying cause of that tooth pain is probably still there. We would rather catch small cavities, chips, or minor damages before they develop into major dental concerns that require more invasive and costly restorative care.
